Some horror just manages to worm its way under your skin. OBSESSION, from YouTube filmmaker Curry Barker is deeply unsettling and surprisingly profound with its commentary on modern relationships. When awkward dude Bear (Michael Johnston) wishes for his best girl friend Nikki (Inde Navarrette) to fall head over heels for him, he unleashes a terrifying chain of events, the ultimate “be careful what you wish for”. That facial expression Inde Navarrette pulls and holds for an agonisingly long time is one of the most horrible things I’ve ever seen. A lot of the effectiveness of the film comes down to her uncanny control as a performer, her ability to chameleonically change in a moment, going from sweet to impish to demonic. This paired with Bear’s increasing horror at how the situation is spinning way out of control and the subtly unnerving way Nikki is filmed in shadows or lurking in the back of shots makes this particularly memorable.
