Review in Brief: Abigail (2024)

Radio Silence do like their showers of viscera to liven up a film’s third act. Following on from READY OR NOT and 2 instalments in the SCREAM franchise, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett stay in the horror genre with their latest, ABIGAIL. A gang of criminals including Dan Stevens, Melissa Barrera and Kathryn Newton are employed to kidnap and hold hostage the daughter of a rich man after her ballet practice, but soon realise the creepy mansion acting as their safehouse has trapped them with a diminutive, pirouetting vampire (Alisha Weir). The strongest element of this is probably the first act when we’re introduced to each of the gang in turn and they then try to work each other out while keeping their own cards close to the chest. Once all the genre stuff comes into play it’s still fun but it’s also pretty messy and inelegant and could probably do with losing 15 minutes. SSP

Review in Brief: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)

The main problem with FURIOSA is that it’s not FURY ROAD. It’s not intending to be but it’ll leave a lot of fans expecting a none-stop thrill-ride disappointed. George Miller’s latest visit to the Australian post-apocalyptic wasteland first seen in MAD MAX tells the origin story of Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy / Alyla Browne) and her quest for revenge against the man who stole her from her family, monstrous warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). There’s no knocking the level of visual artistry on show here; the tactility and level of detail of every level of the post-apocalyptic production design is stunning. The performances, particularly Taylor-Joy, Hemsworth and Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack have a real power to them. But the slightly uneven pacing and some by-the-numbers prequel storytelling means this isn’t quite as compelling as it should have been. Here’s hoping Miller gets the chance make one more sojourn to this Australian hellscape, because you want him to go out with a bit more of a definitive bang.
