Review in Brief: Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024)
The main problem with FURIOSA is that it’s not FURY ROAD. It’s not intending to be but it’ll leave a lot of fans expecting a none-stop thrill-ride disappointed. George Miller’s latest visit to the Australian post-apocalyptic wasteland first seen in MAD MAX tells the origin story of Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy / Alyla Browne) and her quest for revenge against the man who stole her from her family, monstrous warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth). There’s no knocking the level of visual artistry on show here; the tactility and level of detail of every level of the post-apocalyptic production design is stunning. The performances, particularly Taylor-Joy, Hemsworth and Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack have a real power to them. But the slightly uneven pacing and some by-the-numbers prequel storytelling means this isn’t quite as compelling as it should have been. Here’s hoping Miller gets the chance make one more sojourn to this Australian hellscape, because you want him to go out with a bit more of a definitive bang. SSP

Review in Brief: The Fall Guy (2024)
It’s a shame so few people went to the cinema to see one of the most fun movies of the year. David Leitch’s ode to stunt performers, romance and power ballads is a real treat that hopefully more people discover on VOD. After sustaining a terrible injury in an on-set accident, stuntman Colt Seavers (Ryan Gosling) returns to a movie directed by his ex Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt) to double for a troublesome star (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) who has just gone missing. Let’s not pretend this isn’t a story we’ve not all seen told hundreds of times before, but the presentation of THE FALL GUY, the care and attention given to crafting every action scene and the sizzling chemistry of the stars makes it stand out from the crowd. It was probably always going to take a stuntman-turned-director to really get the stunts as an Oscar category debate some real attention, but if you have any doubts, just stick around through the credits to have your mind changed.
